Before you buy any machine to make money from home: a cost and time reality check
The job: Decide whether buying a heat press, laser, button maker, cutter or sublimation setup is worth it before spending anything.
Videos promising that a $200 machine will "make you money from home" skip the hard part. The machine makes products. Customers make money. Most small craft businesses earn little or nothing, and that's normal, not a personal failure. Here's how to check the numbers and test demand before you buy.
1. Know every fee before you price
On Etsy (US) you pay $0.20 per listing (renewed every four months or after each sale), a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing on the order total. If a sale comes through Etsy's Offsite Ads, you also pay 15%, or 12% once you pass $10,000 in yearly sales, when the ads also become mandatory. (Etsy fees policy, Etsy Help)
At markets, add booth fees, travel, a card reader's fees and display costs.
2. Pay yourself in the maths
If you don't count your time, every product looks profitable. Our calculator includes labour at an hourly rate you choose. Try $15 an hour and see whether the price you'd need is one people actually pay.
3. Count sales to pay the machine back
Payback = machine price ÷ profit per sale (after materials, fees and paying yourself). Two worked examples using our calculator's assumptions:
- Heat press ($236): a DTF tee costs about $6.67 to make including 6 minutes of your time at $15/hour. Sold at $16 on Etsy, fees take about $1.77 ($1.52 + $0.25 included in cost), leaving about $7.81 profit, so roughly 30 shirts pay back the press.
- Button maker ($294.95): a 2.25" button costs about 31¢ including your time. Sold at $2 at a fair with no platform fees, that's about $1.69 each, so roughly 175 buttons, plus your booth fees.
Those numbers only work if people actually buy at those prices. Use a price you've seen real buyers pay, not a hopeful one.
4. Test demand without buying
- Order instead of making: print shops (stickers, DTF transfers) let you sell a first batch with no equipment.
- Borrow time on a machine: many libraries and makerspaces have cutters, presses or lasers. Check yours.
- Pre-sell: show mock-ups to your community or at one market, and take orders before buying stock.
- Start with the cheapest version (e.g. a $49.95 starter button press) and upgrade only when you're turning orders away.
5. Avoid the legal traps
- Don't sell designs using characters, logos, sports teams or song lyrics you don't have a licence for. Listings get removed and you can face claims.
- Lasers and heat presses are fire and burn hazards. Follow the maker's safety instructions, ventilate, and never leave them running unattended.
- Check whether your area requires a business licence or sales tax registration. Rules vary by location.
What it really costs per item
Same formula as our calculator. These are deliberately plain examples. Change any number to match your situation.
Break-even price for a DTF tee on Etsy (press already paid off)
| Assumption | Value |
|---|---|
| Blank / material per item ($) | 2.5 |
| Consumables per item ($) | 2.42 |
| Machine minutes per item | 1 |
| Machine power draw (W) | 1500 |
| Machine price ($) | 0 |
| Items over machine life | 1 |
| Labour minutes per item | 6 |
| Your pay ($/hour) | 15 |
| Fixed fee per order ($) | 0.25 |
| Percentage fees (% of price) | 9.5 |
| Target margin (% of price) | 0 |
| Materials + consumables | $4.92 |
|---|---|
| Electricity | $0.00 |
| Machine wear (price / lifetime items) | $0.00 |
| Your labour | $1.50 |
| Shipping absorbed + fixed fees | $0.25 |
| Total cost per item | $6.67 |
| Price needed for a 0% margin after 9.5% fees | $7.37 |
- Margin set to 0% and machine wear to $0 to show the break-even price: below about $7.37 you lose money even with the press paid off.
- Blank and transfer costs as in our heat press guide (Gildan 5000 about $2.50; 11×11 DTF transfer about $2.42).
- Set margin to 25% in the calculator to see the price you'd need for a real profit.

FAQ
Is any machine a guaranteed money-maker?
No. Anyone promising guaranteed income from a machine is selling something, often the machine or a course.
Which machine has the cheapest start?
A starter button press ($49.95) or ordering transfers and pressing with a small handheld press. Both cost under $150 to test an idea.
