Small Batch Machines

How we research and rank

Most "best machine" lists are copied spec sheets with a buy button. We try to do better, and we're upfront about what we can and can't check.

What goes into a guide

  1. Who it's for. Each guide starts from one real job, such as "make 50 custom tumblers a week from a spare room", not from a list of products.
  2. Specs from the source. Work area, power, speed, consumables and running costs come from manufacturer pages and manuals. We link to them.
  3. Problems owners report. We read independent reviews, owner forums and verified-buyer feedback to find recurring problems like weak software, overheating or poor support, and we link to what we used.
  4. Real running costs. We estimate the cost per finished item (materials, electricity, wear parts, marketplace fees) using our open cost-per-piece calculator, so you can check our math.
  5. Ranking. We rank by fit for the stated job, total cost of ownership and reported reliability. Commission rates are not part of the ranking, and some products we list don't earn us anything.

Hands-on vs researched

Every product card is labelled either Researched (we haven't used it ourselves) or Hands-on (we have). Right now everything is labelled Researched.

Images and video

Our charts, spec cards and diagrams are drawn by us from the cited data. We only use brand photos or footage when the brand's media kit or written permission allows it, and we credit them.

Use of AI

We use software, including AI tools, to help gather sources, draft text and build graphics. A guide is only published after its facts have been checked against the cited sources, and every page is written for a reader, not for search engines. We don't publish pages in bulk.
